Sam Houston displayed signs of a high-powered offense in Saturday’s season opener at Western Kentucky, though it wasn’t enough to secure a victory.
The Bearkats took a 24-20 lead early in the third quarter following a fumble recovery by linebacker Jamair Diaz, but late-game struggles and turnovers resulted in SHSU being shut out for the remainder of the game. The Hilltoppers scored 21 unanswered points as they rolled to a 41-24 victory.
Sam Houston quarterback Hunter Watson completed 19 out of 30 passes for 209 yards. He rushed for 91 yards on 14 carries. Running back Elijah Green led the Bearkats with seven catches for 61 receiving yards.
The Bearkats finished the game with 382 yards total offense, but only converted two of 14 third-down opportunities.
The Bearkats will face UNLV for their first home game on Aug. 29. Sam Houston will host their home games at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston for the 2025 football season.
