The Sam Houston Bearkats (0-5) dropped their fifth straight game Thursday night, losing to New Mexico State (3-2) 37-10.
In the Bearkat’s first offensive possession, kicker RJ Lopez missed a field goal after a near touchdown to open the game. Defensive back Emon Allen recovered a fumble by Isaiah Rudison, giving the Bearkats a second opportunity in the first quarter, but they couldn’t capitalize.
After registering only a field goal in the second quarter, the Bearkats responded with a touchdown late in the third quarter. Quarterback Hunter Watson completed a pass to running back Alton McCaskill for a 15-yard score, cutting NMSU’s lead to 13-10.
The Aggies began pulling away in the fourth quarter, opening with two consecutive touchdowns and a 71-yard interception return by Naeten Mitchell.
The Bearkats were held to 244 yards, including just 69 yards on 26 carries. SHSU entered the game as the only Conference USA team without a lost fumble this season, but ended that streak with two turnovers on Thursday.
Sam Houston will look to secure its first win of the season in next week’s homecoming game against Jacksonville State at Shell Energy Stadium.
