The Sam Houston State men’s basketball team (1-0) started the 2025-2026 season with a 95-59 win over the LeTourneau Yellowjackets (0-1) in their season opener on Monday night.
Head Coach Chris Mudge shared his perspective on opening night in his postgame press conference. Entering the season, the team has 10 new additions to the player roster, including five freshmen and five transfers.
“We looked like a team that is young and inexperienced, and that’s OK,” Mudge said. “I thought it was a good growing game for us. You saw our guys get better and more comfortable as we go, and had more guys giving contributions.”
Freshman Jacobe Coleman had a team-high of 17 points for the Bearkats, while freshman Jacob Walker added 13 points. Veteran Damon Nicholas Jr. had 12 points following Walker.
The Bearkats led 40-30 at halftime and went on a 13-0 run to open up the third quarter, leading them to pull away and outscore the Yellowjackets 55-29 in the second half.
The Bearkats shot 44.7% from the field, while the Yellowjackets shot 23.8%. This led to the Bearkats’ win over the Yellowjackets 95-59.
Sam Houston will play No. 10 Texas Tech on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Lubbock. ESPN+ will carry the broadcast.
