The No. 8 seed Sam Houston Bearkats lost to No. 5 seed New Mexico State 3-0 in the opening game of the C-USA Tournament, ending their 2026 season.
The Bearkats entered the game on a seven-game losing streak, including two sweeps by FIU and Jax State. But they were 7-0 in neutral-site games, in which the tournament would take place.
The scoring started in the bottom of the second when NMSU’s Kendal Lunar homered off of Tiffany Sanchez to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
Lunar’s homer was the first of three on the day for the Aggies, and the first of two for her. Fellow Aggie Tamara Carranza homered back-to-back with Lunar in the bottom of the fourth, and those were the last runs of the day for either side.
The SHSU offense was anemic, only managing three hits and scoring zero runs. Sanchez (11-10) took the loss, while Faith Aragon (21-9) earned the win for NMSU.
The Bearkats will now head into the offseason, eyeing greater success next season.
