Priority One hosted the College of Arts and Media’s first Slice of Advice speaker event last Wednesday, featuring Todd McLemore, a Sam Houston State alumnus who has decades of experience in marketing and was recently appointed vice president of product development and marketing at ValvTechnologies.
McLemore attended SHSU from 1993 to 1997, during which he acted as both editor-in-chief of The Houstonian and president of PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America). His first internship was with the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Committee, which he credits as a turning point and pivotal moment in his professional career. McLemore graduated with a journalism degree, which unexpectedly led him into the oil and gas industry, specifically the marketing side.
Walking through the halls of his alma mater, McLemore reflected on his journey up to this point, being vocal about the life-changing lessons and experiences he had at SHSU, but also how things have come almost full circle, with his own children being current Sam Houston students, as well.
As part of the event, McLemore gave a presentation to a room full of students, faculty and staff about his beginnings as a college student, the hurdles and reality of working in the real world, and advice and strategies on being ambitious and chasing opportunities that come your way. The event concluded with a short Q&A, where the audience was encouraged to ask questions.
The College of Arts and Media has another Slice of Advice event scheduled for April 8, with award-winning producer and SHSU alumnus Jenna Jackson serving as the guest speaker. The public portion of the event will begin at 5 p.m. in Room 125 of the Dan Rather Communications building.
