The Sam Houston baseball team travelled to Beaumont to take on Lamar University on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in a 7-4 victory for the Bearkats.
The Bearkats’ bats powered them to victory and ended their four-game losing streak. They improved their overall record to 9-11 (0-3 in CUSA play) with the win.
On the mound for the Bearkats was freshman Gabe Winans, who had a strong night. In the three innings, he struck out two batters and allowed only two hits.
Both Caleb Cotton and Cade Corcoran had two-hit nights for the Bearkats. Cotton had a two-RBI night while Hunter Alvord, Corcoran, Easton Dean and Blake Brown had one RBI each.
Corcoran reached base tonight for a 10th game in a row, the highest streak for the Bearkats this season.
The Bearkats took the lead in the second off a Corcoran home run, which was his second homer of the season.
The Cardinals tied the game 1-1 in the fourth, then they would take the lead 2-1 in the fifth inning. The Bearkats would retake the lead in the sixth inning 5-2 with two hits, and a sacrifice fly would drive in a runner.
In the seventh inning, the Cardinals made it a close game, scoring a run to make it 5-3. The Bearkats ended the Cardinals momentum by scoring two more runs in the eighth inning to make it 7-3.
Despite the Cardinals scoring one more run to make it 7-4, Cooper Harris was able to come in and shut down the Cardinals to secure the win for the Bearkats and earn himself his first save of the season.
The Bearkats will travel to Miami to start a Conference USA three-game series against FIU at FIU Baseball Stadium, with first pitch for the series opener slated for 5 p.m. on Friday. ESPN + will be broadcasting the entire series.
