The Sam Houston baseball team wrapped up a three-game series against Dallas Baptist University on Sunday afternoon. The Bearkats were swept with a 5-4 loss at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Bearkats losing streak was extended to nine games and their record moves to 14-21 and 4-11 in Conference USA play.
Starting on the mound for Sam Houston was Tate Hickman, who in his career high 6.0 inning pitched he tied his career high in strikeouts by striking out six hitters and allowed six hits and one run.
“Tate’s hard to hit,” said Sam Houston Bearkats Head Coach Jay Sirianni. “A lot of those pitches, the hits that he gives up are you know, he doesn’t throw anything straight and nobody really knows where its gonna go but when he’s on attack and the other teams in swing mode usually good things happen, but he threw a bunch of strikes today and gave us a shot.”
The Bearkats would back up their starting pitchers’ dominant performance by opening up the score in the third inning and ultimately led the game 3-0 by the end of the inning.
Parker Blackman led the Bearkats with two hits and one RBI while Caleb Cotton, Cade Corcoran and Sean Bazmore all had a hit. Cotton, Bazmore and Blackman each had an RBI for the Bearkats.
Wes Baker hit his second home run of the year in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the Bearkats lead to 4-0.
DBU would control the later innings by scoring their first run in the sixth inning, and they never looked back as they rode the momentum in the eighth and ninth inning to score three runs to tie the game 4-4 and take it to extra-innings.
DBU would win in extra innings after Dylan Schlaegel hit a solo home run in the tenth inning. Their pitching staff would shut the Bearkats down to seal their victory.
Sam Houston will look to end their nine-game losing streak when they face UTRGV on Tuesday in Don Sanders Stadium, with the first pitch slated for 6 p.m. ESPN + will be broadcasting the matchup.
