The Sam Houston baseball team traveled to Austin to take on No. 4 Texas in a midweek back-and-forth matchup, which ended in a 15-14 loss for the Bearkats on Tuesday night.
Fresh off a series win against Middle Tennessee, the loss to the Longhorns moves the Bearkats’ record to 20-25 and 9-12 in Conference USA.
It was a bullpen game for Sam Houston, which utilized seven pitchers who totalled eight strikeouts.
The Bearkats struck first in the first inning as they put up three runs, before Texas answered with two runs in the second inning to make it a 3-2 game. Sam Houston stretched its lead to 4-2 when a double from Nathan Fink brought home Cade Corcoran. The Bearkats then loaded the bases up for Wes Baker, who hit a grand slam to give the Kats an 8-2 lead.
Despite Fink once again adding a run when he hit a single to bring home Jeric Curtis in the fourth inning, the Longhorns rallied back in the fifth inning to make it a 9-8 game.
Texas would go on to ride the momentum shift and take an 11-9 lead in the sixth inning, but Baker put Sam Houston up 12-11 after hitting a three-run home run in the seventh inning before the Longhorns tied the game in the eighth.
The Bearkats pulled back ahead by two in the top of the ninth, needing just three outs to secure an upset victory. However, the Longhorns cut the gap to one in the bottom of the ninth, before Carson Tinney hit a walk-off two-run home run to secure a 15-13 win for Texas.
The Bearkats will travel to Kennesaw to open up a three-game series against Kennesaw State. The opening game of the series will be on Friday evening with the first pitch slated for 5 p.m. at Mickey Dunn Stadium. ESPN + will broadcast the entire series.
