Sony Pictures announced at CinemaCon, an annual film convention held in Las Vegas, that they are in the process of producing an R-rated, animated feature adaptation of FromSoftware’s “Bloodborne.”
No details on the film’s plot were revealed, nor were there any announcements regarding the film’s director, screenwriter, or actors. It was confirmed, however, that the film will be produced by PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation and YouTuber Seán McLoughlin–better known by his online alias JackSepticEye.
In related news, production has officially started on the “Elden Ring” movie, another one of FromSoftware’s latest games, which is also being adapted into film by studio A24. Writer-Director Alex Garland (“Civil War”, “Annihilation”) is at the helm of this production, and George R.R. Martin, who initially helped write much of the lore for the video game, is attached as a producer. The release date is still undetermined.
Both “Elden Ring” and “Bloodborne” are grimdark fantasy role-playing games that offer similar experiences to FromSoftware’s most popular franchise, “Dark Souls.” These games are known not only for their above-average difficulty, but their unique approach to worldbuilding, wherein the burden is placed upon the player to seek out deeper lore and to analyze NPCs’ esoteric dialogue rather than be delivered an easily comprehensible narrative.
Some fans suspect that these types of games would be too difficult to properly adapt into a satisfying film, while others–like myself–are just tired of the recent onslaught of video game-film adaptations. Only time will tell if Sony Pictures and A24 have what it takes to deliver the poetic torment that fans crave to the big screen.
